Start with the product's outdoor-use instructions. A covered balcony and an exposed patio need different care, and outdoor suitability does not mean a rug can stay wet or withstand every weather condition.
Many outdoor designs use synthetic fibres such as polypropylene. The fibre name alone does not confirm UV resistance, outdoor suitability or the right cleaning method. Check the backing, construction and care directions for your chosen rug. Do not assume an indoor jute or wool rug is suitable outdoors, even under cover.

Mark the proposed outline on the floor before buying. For a lounge setting, compare placing the front legs or all legs of the seating on the rug. Leave room to walk around the arrangement and open doors.

Follow the instructions for the exact design. Water resistance is not waterproofing. Avoid leaving a rug saturated or trapping moisture beneath it, and store it dry during prolonged wet weather when the care directions require this.
Sun exposure affects materials differently. Only rely on UV-resistant or colourfast claims stated for the individual rug, and follow its exposure and storage guidance.
