A LITTLE COLOUR CONFIDENCE

How to choose a rug colour

What colour rug goes with a grey sofa?

A grey sofa can lean warm, cool or almost neutral. Cream, muted sage and soft blue can create a quieter room. Rust, ochre or a strong botanical pattern can add contrast. Compare the rug with the sofa and floor together: two similar greys can look surprisingly different side by side.

What colour rug goes with a green sofa?

Start with the kind of green you have. Olive and moss often sit comfortably with warm cream and earthy accents; cooler sage or blue-green can work with soft stone and inky blue. For a bolder room, explore a patterned rug with a small echo of the sofa colour rather than trying to match every green exactly.

Let the floor shape the contrast

On light floors, a rug with deeper details can define the seating area. On dark floors, a lighter ground can separate the rug from the floor. Strong timber grain, tile pattern and existing artwork also affect how busy the room feels.

Test colour in your own light

Daylight, warm lamps, screens, fibre and pile direction can all change the colours you see. Review close-up and room photographs, and compare a sample if the product offers one. A visualiser helps with ideas; it cannot guarantee colour accuracy.

How the matcher works and its limits

Your sofa colour and calm or bold preference select three curated palettes. Undertone and floor tone help order the rug examples within those palettes and tailor the room guidance. The three palettes are starting points, not measured matches or a complete catalogue search. Your answers stay in this page and reset when you reload.

Palette swatches and styling notes are editorial approximations. The matcher checks current Shopify product details when this page loads. Missing products, unverified responses and products with no purchasable variant are omitted. If a check fails, you can retry it. A rug shown here may not be available in every size. Recheck the product page before buying.

Colour families and palette assignments need a human review when the shortlist changes. The matcher does not assess cleaning requirements, slip resistance, pets, children or room suitability; check those separately in the product’s specifications.
