The living room is high-traffic, so material matters. For a synthetic option, polypropylene is stain-resistant and easy to clean. Polyester resists fading and dries quickly. For natural fibres, wool and jute are durable and warm.
For living rooms, bigger is usually better. Measure your space first. The rug should sit under most of your furniture. Aim for the sofa and coffee table at least. Leave 20–30cm of bare floor around the edges.
Make the rug the centre of the layout. It anchors the whole space. Ideally all furniture legs sit on the rug, or at least the front legs. For a U-shaped sofa, place a medium rug in the middle. Need help? See our Rug Placement Guide.
You can build the room around the rug, or match the rug to your room. If you already have a colour scheme, stay within it. A patterned rug lifts a room with solid furniture. A solid or muted rug works best with patterned upholstery.
